A Roman Vote without Ceaser and Senate present is not worth much

In SAFe, the Roman vote technique is meant to build TWO way accountability between a Team and its Stakeholder(s).   Without Caesar present, the Team opinion is not witnessed nor acknowledged.   The Respect for People Mindset Pillar of Lean is in clear violation.

In the era of Caesar, a no-show for the vote was as good as a “yes for death” – the de facto policy for The Games was to give the crowd what they wanted … entertainment by death (to feel more fortunate than another condemned soul).

Not to be overly dramatic, but as Team members striving for a better tomorrow, you must lobby for your Leaders to “show up” for your Planning Events, otherwise you’re signing up for the “entertainment of your past [status quo]”.

Across the world, Change Agents are trying to establish pragmatic platforms which genuinely enable Leadership.

We don’t miss what we’ve never had in life.

Change begins with the Teams closest to the Customers.   Will you unite towards a better tomorrow?

The Lean Mindset – Use it to Grow Responsibly

Too often I see clients leveraging Lean practices primarily for cost reduction, long-term.

In the early days of Lean adoption, we do see quite a bit of opportunity to reduce costs.  The risk is staying in the cost reduction mode long-term.

The real beauty of Lean is the leadership platform that it enables.   Objective decisions based on solid understanding of economic trade-offs are the key to growing the organization responsibly.

Let’s not forget to leverage Lean Strategically?

The Origin of Continuous Improvement

What we consciously agree to do together, we are more likely to Accept in the outcome.   Continuous improvement begins through acceptance of the prior outcome.   Without group acceptance, there can be no accountability for improvement.

To Accept anything in life requires on-going, proactive Awareness and intentional choices.   In other words, we desire and eventually expect to be included in decision making, if we are to be held accountable for outcomes.

Group Awareness is the origin of continuous improvement.   To remain aware, we must be Included in a predictable and practical manner.

Question

What compels us to include others in decision making?

SAFe Objectives – not a shortcut for the Solution Builders

What is the purpose of Program Increment (PI) Objectives in the Scaled Agile Framework?

They are a shortcut for Stakeholder clarity and engagement.   They are NOT a shortcut to the hard work to bring Transparency and Clarity to Epics, Features and Stories that correspond with those Quarterly PI commitments.

ROAM your risk and burn it down

As you Observe risk, be sure to inform and consult with others regarding probability, triggering events, and impact.  Risk is realized by and affects groups of people, so let them share in the Mitigation plan.  If the group cannot find an option to avoid or reduce the impact, then clearly inventory the risk that the group is conciously choosing to Accept.

Hold this risk inventory centrally for everyone to see and manage.   ROAM status tracking encourages us to plan to manage risk or temporarily agree to figure out how to mitigate risk as we execute our plan (learn and find options as we go).

Observe->Mitigate or Accept

OR  -> Resolve (not a real concern).

Do NOT stop at the Observe step.   Manage your Risk inventory.
